Thank you, Canada: For being such good hosts. For your unfailing courtesy. For your (mostly) beautiful weather. For scheduling no more than 60 percent of your float plane departures at the exact moment when I was trying to say something on television. For not seeming to mind the occasional (or constant) good-natured mimicry of your accents. For your unique TV commercials — for companies like Tim Hortons — which made us laugh and cry. For securing this massive event without choking security, and without publicly displaying a single automatic weapon. For having the best garment design and logo-wear of the games — you’ve made wearing your name a cool thing to do. For the sportsmanship we saw most of your athletes display. For not honking your horns. I didn’t hear one car horn in 15 days — which also means none of my fellow New Yorkers rented cars while visiting. For making us aware of how many of you have been watching NBC all these years. For having the good taste to have an anchorman named Brian Williams on your CTV network, who turns out to be such a nice guy. For the body scans at the airport which make pat-downs and cavity searches unnecessary. For designing those really cool LED Olympic rings in the harbor, which turned to gold when your athletes won one. For always saying nice things about the United States…when you know we’re listening. For sharing Joannie Rochette with us. For reminding some of us we used to be a more civil society. Mostly, for welcoming the world with such ease and making lasting friends with all of us.

Thanks Brian for your kind words about Canada — Canadians and our spectacular city of Vancouver. We love it here and we’re so glad you and the NBC Today Show gang had such a great time. Come back and see us soon!

An early winter onset promises a pre-Christmas bonanza for Vancouver and Whistler bound boarders and skiers. Both Whistler-Blackcomb and all three North Shore mountains have opened or are opening at least a couple of weeks earlier than usual, with 2010’s premier Olympics sliding destination Whistler officially up and running as of November 14.

Whistler-Blackcomb’s year-old Peak-2-Peak gondola — which offers a heart-stopping 4 km (2.5 Mi) journey, breathtaking vistas and links the two magnificent peaks — is the highest lift of its kind at 436 metres (1427 ft) above the valley floor. Its opening in December, 2008, was the final link in what’s claimed as the longest continuous lift system in the world. Record-breaking or not, Peak-2-Peak offers an epic transportation experience between North America’s two leading ski destinations and perhaps the world’s best pre- and après-ski attractions, dining and accommodations.

Where most ski-lifts operate on a single cable, Peak-2-Peak uses four stationary carbon-steel cables to support the cabins (two for each direction) — like rails across the valley. Each 97-ton rope can support 767,723 pounds, and are designed to prevent swaying and allow the gondolas to operate safely in winds up to 80 KpH (50 mph).

2010’s Winter Olympics are Vancouver-based, with several Alpine events being staged in Whistler.

As the early snow continues to fall, Metro Vancouver’s Mount Seymour is planning an earlier-than-usual opening on Friday, November 20, with a current base of 70 cm, increasing as the freezing level descends. North Vancouver’s popular Grouse Mountain and Cypress Bowl resorts — the latter set to host free-style and boarding Olympic events — also enjoyed partial early openings on November 14 and if current snow conditions prevail, expect earlier than usual expanded openings by late November.

Cypress Bowl offers 47 designated alpine runs — many accessible for night-skiing — and 19 km of groomed cross-country trails. As well as easy-to-challenging downhill runs, Mt. Seymour offers snowshoe, cross-country and tubing opportunities, with full rental facilities and instruction readily available.

It all began when “The Great One”, Wayne Gretzky, lit the Olympic Cauldron at the downtown Vancouver waterfront on February 12!

Oh, the Vancouver Olympics memories …

Thanks to John Biehler at johnbiehler.com for the excellent above video!

Canada hosted the 2010 Games in Vancouver, Richmond and Whistler from February 12 to 28, 2010, and soon Vancouver and Whistler will also be host to the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games from March 12 to 21, 2010. Some 5,500 Olympic athletes and team officials from more than 80 countries took part in 86 medal events during the 17-day Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games — with the proud host country capturing 14 gold medals to set an new Olympic games record for most gold medals won, and most golds won by a host country

An additional 1,350 athletes from over 40 countries will participate in 64 medal events at the 12-day Vancouver 2010 Winter Paralympic Games.

An estimated three billion people, around the world, watched the Games on their televisions, and saw Canadian hospitality, fanfare and patriotism at its best. It’s been a pleasure hosting the world! We look forward to seeing you again soon.

Winter 2010 Background Information:

All of the Vancouver and Whistler Olympic venues are now complete and testing of the various venues are complete. In total, $600 million will be spent on Olympic-venue construction. Additional costs have included $600 million dollars for an upgrade to the Sea-to-Sky Highway connecting Vancouver to Whistler; nearly $1 billion on an expanded waterfront convention centre to house the Winter Games media; $1.5 billion on a new elevated Canada Line light-rapid SkyTrain transit line to connect downtown Vancouver to Vancouver International Airport (YVR) in Richmond; and a $1 billion security budget for a joint Canadian and U.S. security presence. All in, the total will reach a Winter 2010 Games cost of $6 billion.

So, what does it mean for the Vancouver visitor and BC resident? For starters, a much improved downtown Canada Line transit system to make it easier for visitors to travel on public transit from YVR to downtown Vancouver, a state-of-the-art highway safety improvement to move more cars along the scenic Sea-to--Sky Squamish/Whistler corridor, a new wood and glass Vancouver waterfront convention centre architectural masterpiece, magnificent community venues which will be enjoyed by future Olympic athletes for years to come, and much more!

In addition, the much reported, False Creek Olympic Village sits majestically along Vancouver’s 14-mile pedestrian and bike-friendly sea wall. This high density development will provide athletes with luxurious accommodations in a cosmospolitan, waterfront scenic setting near Yaletown.

On February 12, 2010, The Olympic Winter Games opening ceremony will take place in downtown Vancouver’s 60,000-seat BC Place. To wrap things up, the closing ceremony spectacle will be broadcast around the world on February 28, 2010, and will also be held in BC Place. This will be the first time in Olympic Games history that the Olympic opening and closing ceremonies will be held in the comfort of an indoor venue.

Launched in October, Internet giant Google has added Street View to its free Google Maps online service. It is a great, visual online travel resource and makes it so easy to explore Metro Vancouver before you visit!

Now prospective British Columbia visitors can stroll virtually along Downtown Vancouver streets, and surrounding municipalities, and easily search for Vancouver attractions and city landmarks. For those planning to visit Vancouver and Whistler during the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, Street View will allow tourists to visit Olympic venues online. Google and the Vancouver Olympic Committee recently announced that the 2010 Winter Games venues will be mapped and photographed in time for the Games. Soon you will be able to tour “LiveCity Yaletown” plaza, Canada Hockey Place, The Richmond Oval speed skating venue and many more Olympic venues.

Metro Vancouver, Whistler and Squamish were photographed in 2008 and 2009, by Google-operated vehicles with rooftop-mounted cameras that zipped around city streets. Media reports state that the Vancouver street view photos use the most recent Google technology to display the sharpest images to date. See for yourself by visiting the following popular Vancouver sights and attractions:

Now open for ridership: a $2 billion 19-kilometre automated light metro system provides a new fast, frequent transportation option for British Columbia visitors arriving and departing from the Vancouver International Airport (YVR) in Richmond, B.C.

Travellers are now able to cost-effectively travel from YVR to their downtown Vancouver destination. Travellers can purchase their boarding passes at the Airport and ride to downtown Vancouver in about 25 minutes.

Canada Line trains travel through a 14-minute long tunnel through the downtown core, crosses two bridges, and stops at 16 stations along the route to Richmond and YVR.

City visitors planning to catch a Canada Line to downtown Vancouver should note that rapid transit trains will alternate between end stops of YVR and Richmond-Brighouse.

BC's resorts range from rustic, wilderness or eco-tourism retreats to opulent four-season destinations and recreational facilities offering spa treatments, fine dining and five-star service and much more.

BC’s resorts range from rustic, wilderness or eco-tourism retreats, through activity-driven properties — like sport fishing lodges, guest ranches and marina-based enterprises -– to opulent four-season destinations and recreational facilities offering spa treatments, fine dining and five-star service where almost every imaginable amenity is available for the asking.

As well as world-renowned ski resorts, BC has health resorts, marina-based and fly-in resorts and romantic get-away resorts, as well as dozens of specialty properties for kayaking, camping and recreational vehicle touring – and they’re located throughout BC’s heartlands in forests, on spectacular beachfront or island properties, in or near the mountains that dominate the Provincial landscape and sometimes even, in or near the Province’s major cities.

Each one offers a very different, often unique experience. “Rustic elegance in Nature’s edge …” describes one Vancouver Island property, while another says its forest-setting villas ” … are carefully designed to take full advantage of the extraordinary geography of BC’s Sunshine Coast.”

Others offer:

“ … luxuriously appointed rooms, spectacular views;”

“ … one of the top 10 anchorages in the Western Hemisphere.”

“ … nine acres of majestic land along the ninth fairway.”

With 700 or more properties from which to choose, it’s no exaggeration to claim that BC’s resort industry has something for every visitor -– whether their preference is for indulgence and luxury or a more modest family or recreational experience.

Following dates and excursions in and around Vancouver, Jillian and her suitors travelled by limousine along the scenic, and recently upgraded, Vancouver to Whistler Sea to Sky Highway — the golden route to the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

In Whistler, the show’s cast checked into the magnificent Chateau Whistler Resort, located at the base of Blackcomb Mountain. The next day, Jillian and and one of her dates experienced the thrilling Ziptrek through a Cedar, Hemlock, and Douglas Fir forest canopy, played in the fresh powder snow above the Tantalus Glacier, wined and dined in one of Whistler’s finest restaurants, and relaxed in one of the many hot tubs with sweeping mountain views.

After exploring the West Coast, the show travelled east along the historic Canadian Pacific Railway lines. Jillian and the gang boarded the Rocky Mountaineer passenger train in downtown Vancouver and enjoyed “GoldLeaf” onboard service as they rode in style through the British Columbia Fraser Valley and Canyon, Hell’s Gate, the Okanagan, and the BC Rockies — with a “one of the most dramatic rose ceremonies ever” destination of Banff, Alberta.
