Some people pay a good chunk of money to venture out to sea on a memorable BC whale watching adventure — while others simply grab a coffee at Delaney’s in Dundarave and head down to the scenic West Vancouver seawall.
Certainly, it’s not an everyday occurrence but for some lucky residents and city visitors, the sight of a grey whale off the shore of Dundarave and Ambleside Beach is a day to remember.
The grey whale — or one of his friends — has been recently spotted along the Sunshine Coast, from Sechelt to Gibsons, as well as in Fales Creek, English Bay, and in Howe Sound near Squamish.
Canada Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) marine mammal experts say it’s normal for grey whales to venture close to shore to feed.
In the winters, grey whales travel south to the warm, shallow Pacific Ocean near Baja, Mexico and then head north in the spring to the abundant cold-water shoreline of Alaska. Experts believe some of the migrating whales choose to stop and remain in the waters of British Columbia during the summer months.
You never know who you might meet along Vancouver’s scenic city seawalls! Be sure to have your camera or smartphone handy to capture a wild whale moment along BC’s shoreline.
